Four years ago, I wanted Trump to lose because it was the most likely path, as I could see it, toward freedom.
It’s not that I thought Biden would politically give us more freedom. In fact, it’s almost the opposite of that. I think what leftism stands for is a general lack of civil liberties, ironically. Leftism has come to represent a sort of totalitarian uniformity of thought, word and deed, in the most deadly and destructive ways possible.
However, most of the policies either “side” is afraid of are usually the most effective when their allies are in office. When your team is at the helm, you let your collective guards down.
The political right perpetrates more terrors on the cultural right than the left ever has. The worst of the lockdowns happened during the Trump administration. The most gun bans were enacted under Trump, by Trump. He even instigated red flag laws that targeted legal, authorized gun owners with state sanctioned assassinations. Yes, the states passed those laws, but it was Trump who literally said, “take the guns first and go through due process later.” Essentially, Trump’s America is one in which the Bill Of Rights is a nice bedtime story we tell our kids to make them feel good while being starved to death and murdered by a SWAT team in their sleep because their parents followed all the laws. Trump gave those states that hate gun owners the green light to exterminate their enemies.
I look back at state’s rights in this country and recall Obama sending the federal government after states for decriminalizing medical marijuana, the federal government going ape shit under Biden over states criminalizing abortions, and most recently under Biden, going after states defending and strengthening the border. But under Trump, he basically said to the states most likely to target legal gun owners that he would look the other way if they wanted to pass red flag laws that targeted legal gun owners for assassination.
How does any right wing person reconcile that? Was it just that Trump was ok with more state freedoms separate from the federal government? No, it was more than just a liberal attitude toward state rights. He wanted them and commanded them to perpetrate this specific act. He didn’t say, “I hope you take the guns first.” He didn’t say “you could take the guns first.” He demanded, “TAKE the guns first.” I’m all for state rights, but please, freedom lovers, leave the states that sanction extermination of gun owners. And don’t imagine Trump after allowing it and demanding it is any kind of hero of 2A. The dems never wanted to take your guns as effectively as Trump did.
The cultural right allows bad stuff to happen to them when they believe they have a competent POTUS in office to defend them. As soon as Biden took office, people ripped the masks off their faces that they tolerated under Trump. The whole country stopped getting boosters almost full stop, and the world quickly went back to normal. At one point, Biden made public announcements every couple days explaining (with no real explanation) how everyone could be outside together now without a mask and so on. The Biden administration had to rapidly repeal all the Covid nonsense and claim their one month of intense (but unenforceable) policies saved the day and made all the difference (because “Trump never did enough”). But really, what happened was the culture became intolerant of bullshit under Biden, and he couldn’t admit that disobedient, maskless faces flattened the curve.
It would seem that culture steers the political climate. But culture and politics mirror the old chicken and egg conundrum. The culture is prone to under reacting or over reacting to their perceptions of the political climate at any given time. These are the climate changes that activate us and in the case of a potential Trump re-election, deactivate us and threaten our progress.
Once again, I don’t hate Trump. He’s fucking funny as hell. Politically, I don’t so much give a fuck. What is done politically can be undone culturally. It seems obvious to me that Trump getting re-elected would be a bad thing for the same reasons that Biden getting elected ended the lock downs and got the bump stock bans overturned.
I don’t think that the right would be “deradicalized” per say. Maybe that’s true. It’s sad that traditional family values are now perceived by many as a radical notion. But the right letting their guards down this decade would be bad for everyone.
Having an alleged right wing POTUS gives a false sense of security to the civilized, socialized, productive citizenry, and many of the awakened cultural right will go back to sleep.
We can’t afford that.
The worst thing about the cultural right so far is that they haven’t allowed themselves a BDS (Biden Derangement Syndrome) reaction the way the left embraced TDS. Biden hasn’t been polarizing enough because he’s OBVIOUSLY not the man running the country. Everyone knows it. Hard to be mad at an incoherent old guy who babbles, eats ice cream and shits his pants. In fact, having Biden as POTUS garners sympathy for him because he’s clearly a victim of elder abuse giving public speeches at this stage in his dementia. He’s even said so among his ramblings, stating he will “get in trouble” if he talks out of turn. So, we can’t, none of us, honestly get mad at Biden himself. And the problem is, we don’t know who to be upset with since the handlers and puppeteers are so well masked. It’s apparently not Kamala Harris. She makes Terrence Howard sound like a smart man.
There is however a common theme in what the cultural right is upset about. The theme is leftism. The cultural right needs to focus their ire on leftism in general. The right needs a L(eft)DS wherein the right may liberally freak out over anyone on the left or even with any hint of leftism. The cultural right NEEDS to "over" react as if it’s worth burning the whole house down to kill a spider. The cultural right NEEDS to be more afraid of the consequences of “tolerating” leftism. Fear in general may not be as divisive as many suggest. Society the world over whether or not it acknowledges it, needs this healthy fear from the cultural right.
The cultural right is historically afraid of feeling that way. It’s like a monster who knows it is a monster and doesn’t want to know what happens if it starts becoming an angry monster. Jekyll afraid of Hyde. The cultural right needs to stop unconsciously comparing itself when angry to the Dr. Jekyll context (imposed Hitler context, imposed by you know who). If only they could reframe their personas to align with the dormant state of the Hulk, the Bruce Banner persona. The cultural right fears letting the Hulk out, just as Bruce Banner does. Every time Bruce wakes up as himself, he has destroyed all of his clothes except the crotch which disappointingly stays the same size regardless of the transformation. But the Incredible Hulk is ultimately a hero. Maybe his crotch was bigger all along than he gives himself credit. Regardless, the release of the big green monster is long overdue.
This is the green movement the world really needs.
Sources on Trump banning guns and supporting red flag laws?
Not calling you a liar, but it seems that he defended 2A by pulling us out of a u.n. gun treaty.
Look up “take the guns first, go through due process later” quote. This was his perspective on red flag laws at the time. He also banned bump stocks and I think silencers. It was the most egregious form of gun restrictions since Ronald Reagan.
